Design Considerations for the Selection of an STL System for HDTV
Digital Block Converter & COFDM
Central Receive antenna systems employ block down converters to convert the higher frequency bands such as 7 and 13 GHz down to the 2 GHz range for transmission over the coaxial cable run to the central receiver which is normally located some distance from the antenna.
Digital ENG Using the Analog Coder System
The ENG Analog Coder is another innovative Nucomm product that makes the conversion to the new FCC 2 GHz plan simple easy and inexpensive.

Expanding ENG Central Receive Sites to Include COFDM
The application of COFDM to ENG is becoming much more the Modulation of choice. Several reasons driving the switch to COFDM include:
  1. Superior reception from sites not accessible using analog modulation methods.
  2. Superior reception from moving vehicles such as helicopters and moving ENG vans.
  3. Reduced bandwidth requirements for a high quality picture; 6, 7 or 8 MHz.
  4. Price of COFDM systems is now at more affordable levels and still coming down.
High Data Rate ENG System Using VSB Modulation
The High Data Rate 70 MHz VSB Digital Mode is another innovative Nucomm product designed specifically for Digital ENG operation. When attached to a digital ENG transmitter such as the Nucomm Digital Newscaster ENG truck transmitter, the system can simultaneously transmit a variety of signals within the new FCC 2 GHz 12 MHz bandwidth as well as standard 25 MHz bandwidths.

The Analog Coder
As the HDTV build out enters its final phase engineering managers at small to mid-market network affiliates and independent stations are still looking for cost-effective solutions to completing their digital upgrades. One area of expense in the transmission path is the microwave used for STL and intercity relay applications. The ability to reuse existing analog links to support ATSC digital signals would indeed be a welcome development. The objective would be an upgraded link, capable of transporting the ATSC digital signal at 19.39 Mbps, as well as control monitoring and telecommunications signals without loss of system performance. In fact, the need has already been answered.
